For Michael J. Vetter, practicing law is more than a profession; it is a family tradition rooted in genuine human connection. Growing up in a family of attorneys, including his father, he learned firsthand that the lasting value of a legal career isn’t found in courtroom drama, but in the relationships built with clients over time. He watched his father help people protect their businesses, support their families, and navigate tough times, leaving a lasting impact across generations. That legacy shaped Michael’s belief that legal representation should fit into a client’s life, not disrupt it.
If you want to understand how Michael approaches a complex legal challenge, look no further than his favorite pastime, restoring antiques. The meticulous process of antique restoration requires an eye for detail, patience, the ability to budget time and resources, and the adaptability to solve unexpected problems as they arise. Whether he’s bringing a forgotten piece back to its former glory or developing a legal strategy, he understands that the smallest details can make the difference between a project that falls short and one that reaches its full potential.
That same philosophy shapes the way he works with his clients. Michael knows that legal issues don’t always fit neatly into the workday. Recognizing that his clients have jobs, families and busy lives beyond their legal matters, he makes himself available when and where they need him. Whether that’s over dinner, during an evening conversation, or on a weekend call, he is dedicated to accommodating any schedule.
His approach is grounded in a broad civil litigation background developed over years of experience. Before joining Kopka Law Group, Michael honed his skills at two insurance defense firms in Minneapolis, where he handled matters involving automobile and trucking, construction, general liability, tort, insurance coverage, premises liability, and subrogation. Additionally, he spent nearly two years as a law clerk in Nashville, Tennessee, where he developed a deep understanding of legal writing and gained insights into diverse viewpoints on civil litigation matters.
Michael’s commitment to relationships extends beyond his clients. From his time serving as Co-Chair of the New Lawyers Committee for the Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association to his current role building out Kopka Law Group’s Milwaukee office, he has embraced opportunities to contribute to his professional community and mentor others. As he continues to expand his practice across Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois, his focus remains simple: to make working with a lawyer feel less like an intimidating chore and more like connecting with a trusted partner who truly has your back.
