Kate M. Dittmeier has built her career on taking on challenging work for people who need someone in their corner. Her approach is client-centered: listen closely, communicate clearly, and remember that behind every case is a person who wants to be seen and understood. Meaningful representation means more to Kate than just arguing the law, it means making sure clients know someone is fighting for them.

She began her legal career as a law clerk and intern working with the Kentucky Innocence Project and the public defender’s office. After becoming an attorney, she reinvestigated and litigated serious felony cases and developed extensive experience in appellate advocacy and litigation. One of her most significant accomplishments was winning a decades-old post-conviction case, correcting an injustice and earning a published opinion from the Kentucky Court of Appeals. She enjoys the intellectual challenges of the law, particularly research and writing. Writing is her superpower, and she brings a storyteller’s instinct to every case.

Her career working at Kopka Law Group began after hearing from a close colleague about the firm’s talented people and culture. She was drawn to a place that is committed to outstanding client service, supporting the attorneys who provide it, and working with attorneys who support each other. For Kate, the areas of law she practices may have changed, but the through line will always be advocating for people.

Kate is deeply involved in her community. She is the immediate past president of the Women Lawyers Association of Jefferson County, where she supported educational programming and networking opportunities for women in the legal profession. In 2024, she ran for Louisville Metro Council, motivated by her interest in local government and its impact on residents’ daily lives. She has also volunteered her legal services with La Casita Center, assisting new arrivals to the United States seeking asylum.

Outside the office, Kate is a distance runner, a gardener, and an avid cook who is happiest making cozy meals for her family, like her vegetable pot pie or a slow-simmered beef bourguignon on a fall night. She is the proud mother of two children and a mischievous dog, and she once coached her kids’ elementary school cross country team, turning a few reluctant runners into fans of the sport.
