Joel D. Groenewold’s practice includes commercial litigation, premises liability, products liability, general insurance defense, trucking/railroad litigation, and real estate litigation. His clients include retail and restaurant companies, including grocery stores and shopping centers, as well as construction, trucking and railroad companies. He has tried well over 30 jury trials in his career in many different counties in Illinois, and has handled cases in both state and federal court in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Kansas. Joel also has a strong record of obtaining defense or favorable verdicts in many of the cases he has tried.
Joel represents several Midwestern retail establishments, and has taken numerous premises liability cases to trial throughout his career. He also counsels his clients not only on litigated matters and personal injury claims, but on employment matters, commercial disputes, contractual issues, compliance with rules and regulations, and safety/risk management in retail and commercial establishments. He also represents large commercial clients, including office buildings, malls, commercial landlords, construction companies, national restaurant chains, and national automobile auction houses, again with regard to a myriad of issues including premises liability, business practices, and general commercial liability.
With regard to real estate experience, Joel has handled real estate matters for over 13 years, and has done so for sellers, buyers, lessors, and lessees. He has handled cases involving mechanic’s liens, foreclosures, evictions, and breaches of contracts and leases. Early in his career, Joel also handled matters for a local municipality in Illinois, which included prosecuting cases against landowners for municipal violations which resulted in properties being declared unfit for habitation and forcing the property owners to either remedy the situation or tear down the habitations.
Joel is a member of the Defense Research Institute, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel, the American Bar Association, and the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel.
He is admitted to the state bar of Illinois, the state bar of Wisconsin (provisional, pending only the swearing-in), the United States Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, and the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois, along with the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
